DAVID BOWIE - LYON, STADE DE GERLAND 28 JUIN 1987 

 

  

 

 

 

 

N'ayant pas fait de compte-rendu à cette époque, nombre de souvenirs se sont peu à peu estompés, mais grâce à certaines photos et vidéos concernant le GLASS SPIDER TOUR,

 

Certaines images me reviennent...

 

I didn't make a review of this show at that time, and my memory about it may fade now, but thanks to the official video recording of the Sydney show and some photos of the tour, I can make out parts of that night, some even coming back quite clearly...

J'étais à ce moment là en Terminale, donc toujours chez mes parents, et lorsque j'ai appris que David Bowie, dont j'étais un fan depuis maintenant 5 ans, allait passer à Lyon, je me suis précipité pour aller acheter les billets à la FNAC.

 

At that time I heard about David Bowie about to come to France, and fortunately in Lyon, to give what they called a tremendous show, very theatrical...    I ran immediately to buy  a ticket !               

 

      

 

En en parlant au lycée le lendemain, mes amis les plus proches m'ont fait part de leur désir de s'y rendre aussi. Il faut dire que nous étions déjà allés ensemble voir Tina Turner un mois plus tôt au Palais des Sports, donc nous étions rôdés pour retourner à Lyon...

 

Some of my school friends decided to go too. In fact we had all seen together Tina Turner one month before at the Palais Des Sports, always in Lyon, so we were ready for that show... 

 

Restait le problème du transport, et c'est mon père qui s'y colla... Le pauvre nous déposa et resta jusqu'à la fin du concert à tourner autour du stade pour nous attendre !

 

We didn't know how to go from Grenoble to Lyon, which is about a hundred kilometers far. But my father said he would all take us by car. Poor dad, he waited for the show to finish outside the Gerland stadium, so more than 2 hours...!

 

Nous arrivâmes au Stade Gerland vers 17h00. Il faisait beau, et lorsque nous sommes entrés dans le stade, nous avons été suffoqués par l'immensité des lieux ...

 

We arrived in the Stade de Gerland at 5.00 pm. The weather was shiny, with a beautiful blue sky, and when we entered the stadium, we were astounded for the place was immense ...

 

Au fond, une énorme « araignée de verre » (« Glass Spider ») dominait la scène et les spectateurs... Vraiment impressionnante !

 

On the far side of the stadium was an immense "glass spider", it really was... It dominated the stage and the crowd... Really impressive !

 

Il ne paraissait pas y avoir trop de monde, mais c'était trompeur, évidemment, du fait de la taille des lieux. Sur le sol était posée une bâche qui emplissait tout le stade : nous nous sommes avancés en petit groupe en courant vers le devant de la scène.

 

For the moment there wasn't quite a lot of people I thought, but this was all illusion, for the place was so big... We ran in small groups towards the stage...                    

 

 

 

 

Je me souviens que j'étais beaucoup plus excité par cet évènement que mes amis, et que je dû les motiver à se dépêcher un peu pour ne pas perdre de précieuses places !

 

I can remember having been very much more excited by the event than my friends, for whom Bowie was just another rock star, well a legend, yes, but just another one... I had to motivate them to hurry for I didn't want to lose some precious places...

 

Je commis l'erreur d'acheter sans attendre un programme de la tournée, une bêtise car je me rendis vite compte qu'il allait me gêner tout au long du concert pour ... Applaudir !

 

I immediately bought a concert program with great pictures of Bowie inside, but it wouldn't be long before i realize it was a mistake : It was a heavy job to... Applause with it in my hands during the entire show ! So I put it under my shirt and in my trousers, but the perspiration finished to damage it.

La première partie était assurée par Kent, un groupe lyonnais que je ne connaissais pas alors. Leur prestation, je m'en souviens, était excellente, et le chanteur interprétait avec beaucoup d'énergie des morceaux entraînants et plein d'humour. Ils quittèrent la scène avec un franc succès, puis ce fût l'attente, la longue attente qui s'installa.

 

The first part was played by Kent, a local group I didn't know then... Their part, I can remember, was excellent, and the singer had a lot of energy and humour. They left the stage leaving the crowd in a total frenzy, but then a long wait begun...

 

                 

 

       

 

 

 

 

Bowie, sur les tickets, était annoncé pour 19h30, mais il fallut attendre la nuit tombée, vers 21h45, pour que le concert commence.

 

Bowie, as written on the ticket was awaited for 7.30 pm, but we had to wait for a total night, almost 9.45 pm for the show to begin.

 

Nous attendions beaucoup de cette tournée, qui avait été annoncée dans le plus pur style Bowie des débuts, c'est-à-dire très théâtral ... Et pour être théâtral, cela commençait bien, avec une drôle d'introduction qui rappelait vaguement quelque chose : la fin du titre « It's No Game Part 1 » de l'album « Scary Monsters » .

 

We had big wishes for tis tour. The theatrical feel of it was confirmed with that strange intro I recognized immediately, the end of "It's No Game Part One" from the album "Scary Monsters".

 

Carlos Alomar (Guitare), un ancien des tournés Bowie (depuis 1974 !), entrait seul sur scène, dans un look très cuir. Il avait des cheveux coiffés style « porc-épic » ( !), et de fausses lunettes rondes posées sur son front, et qui reflétaient deux yeux supplémentaires !

 

Carlos Alomar, who's been playing guitar on Bowie shows since 1974, entered alone the stage, with  leather clothes , a funny haircut and false sunglasses on his forehead, that reflected two more eyes !

 

Venue de nulle part, la voix de Bowie commanda soudain : « SHUT UP ! » (« Tais-Toi !) 

 

Coming from nowhere, suddenly the Bowie voice shouted : "Shut Up !"

 

Pendant l'introduction, une troupe de danseurs descendit du sommet de l'araignée géante, puis commenca à s'agiter sur la scène pendant que Carlos Alomar achevait son solo.

 

While Carlos Alomar played his intro, some dancers came down from the top of the spider on ropes, then hit the stage itself to play dance steps...

 

"SHUT UP !!!"

 

Puis ce fût de nouveau le silence, remplacé immédiatement par une clameur s'élevant bientôt de la foule.

 

Then the silence again, soon filled with the sound of the crowd shouting as loud as they could.

 

 Entrée en scène théâtrale comme promis, Bowie apparut soudain, assis sur une chaise harnachée au sommet de « l'araignée ». Il descendait, doucement, en récitant la partie narrative de « Glass Spider » (1987), alors que, touchant enfin le sol, un des danseurs détachait les mousquetons.

 

Then Bowie appeared, sitting on a silver chair, coming too from the top of the spider, and talking thru a rustic silver telephone which hide a microphone for the intro of "Glass Spider". While touching the stage, one of the dancers removed the ropes from the chair.

 

  

 

                     

 

 

 

 

Entrée en scène spectaculaire, s'il en était. Quelque chose me gênait néanmoins, tous ces danseurs qui s'agitaient sur scène, très envahissants, noyant Bowie dans une choregraphie parfois compliquée !

 

A great introduction for the show for sure.But I soon didn't feel so at ease for all these dancers on the stage were very intrusives I thought, ant their choregraphy wasn't very easy to follow at times...!

 

 C'était la première fois que je voyais un concert dans un stade, et le son était décevant, je parle de celui qui venait de la foule.

 

The deception came out also from the sound, I mean the sound that came from the crowd.

 

En salle, le public se fait entendre très fortement en masse : en stade, il ne ressort qu'en une vague rumeur, entrecoupée d'applaudissements par-ci par-là ...  Il me semblait alors que Bowie, pour ce show ne rencontrait que peu de succès.

 

In arenas the crowd can be heard en masse, which makes a lot for the feeling of a live concert. In a stadium, you don't have this, and you only hear some applauses then and there, as if there was no success for the show. This is quite frustrating !

 

  

 

                                                         

 

 

 

 

Bien sûr, ce n'était qu'une impression ... Car les quelques 30.000 personnes présentes étaient là pour lui, après tout ...

 

But it only was an impression for the 30.000 persons in the stadium were there to see Bowie, weren't they ?

 

  

 

                     

 

 

 

 

                     

 

 

 

 

Pendant « Bang Bang » (1987), alors que Bowie évoluait seul sur scène en sollicitant le public des premiers rangs, une jeune fille monta soudain sur scène par la gauche, sous les cris de la foule. Les danseurs s'occupèrent d'elle et l'amenèrent vers Bowie, non sans lui avoir préalablement passé une robe !

 

While the band played "Bang Bang",as Bowie was singing at the front of the stage, a young girl managed to climb on the left part of the stage, as the crowd shouted as loud as they could. The dancers came immediately before her to take her to Bowie's side, but first told her to put a dress on !

 

Bientôt, elle prit de l'assurance et se mit à danser avec lui ... Bien sûr, c'était une complice de la troupe, et nous nous étions fait franchement avoir ...

 

So shy first, she soon appeared to be very self-assured, and started to make dance steps with him... Sure she was part of the dancers , and we all laughed about that funny trick...

 

Les points noirs du concert étaient à mon avis « Absolute Beginners » (1986) et « Loving The Alien » (1984), qui, mis ensemble, faisaient retomber l'énergie du concert. En effet, ces versions étaient trop lentes et trop longues, « à n'en plus finir », pensais-je  ...

 

The songs that didn't fit in the show, in my opinion, were "Absolute Beginners" and "Loving The Alien". Put together, the energy of the beginning of the show was completely lost. Besides these versions were very long ones with a slower tempo than the originals : I wanted them to end as soon as possible for we could start to jump on our feet again ! These were my feelings at that time...

 

Pour « Fashion » (1980), Bowie effectuait quelques cascades sur scène, dans une mise en scène de bagarre de rue où il était pris à partie, et dont il sortait, évidemment vainqueur ...

 

For "Fashion" Bowie made a special choreography, together with Tony Basil, with very impressives and theatrical dance parts, with a kind of street fight between him and the dancers. But at the end of it, he was for sure the winner, of course !

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Une surprise pour moi à l'époque était la reprise de « All The Madmen » (1971). C'était la première fois que Bowie la reprenait sur scène, et la version avait été retravaillée pour l'occasion ... Pour beaucoup, ce titre était obscur et pour le moins bizarre, surtout dans la partie centrale du titre, dans laquelle figure une courte partie narrative ...

 

Quite a surprise at that time was the inclusion in the set of "All The Madmen", a cert for all Bowie fans. It was the first time he used it live for any tour ... The song had been reworked and sounded much stranger than the original version, which is something... The central narrative part, especially, was kept from the original and it sounded like anything but "Let's dance" or "China Girl" ! 

 

La deuxième surprise était « Big Brother » (1974), que Bowie n'avait pas rejoué depuis 1974 ...

 

The second surprise was "Big Brother" which Bowie hadn't played since 1974...

 

Mais cette version-ci était nettement décevante, car sa voix n'arrivait plus dans les aigus de la version d'origine. De plus, elle était affublée d'un solo de batterie sensé ressembler à celui effectué lors de la tournée 1976 pendant « Panic In Detroit » , et malheureusement celui-ci était largement moins inspiré : on y entendait même des parties vocales pré-enregistrées,  qui, à mon goût donnaient un effet déplorable ...

 

But this version was quite disappointing. Bowie's voice couldn't sing anymore the high notes of the original version. Furthermore, in the middle part of it while Bowie left the stage for a costume change, the band played a long drum solo, as to remind the 1976 tour with "Panic In Detroit". But that solo was uninspired I thought, with even some strange pre-recorded voices as part of it, which sounded atrocious for me and still does while listening to the tapes...

 

Ce titre, avec son long solo permettait à Bowie de se préparer pour le morceau suivant,"'87 And Cry", avec un changement de costume. Il apparaissait par la gauche, au sommet d'une plateforme, une corde roulée à la main, dans une combinaison bleue, sorte de "survêtement. Sur la scène, certains danseurs étaient vêtus de tenues pseudo-policières, avec un casque...

 

This song allowed Bowie to go through the following one, which was "'87 And Cry". He stood on the top of a scaffolding, a rope rolled around his hands in a blue combination as a tracksuit. Down on the stage were several dancers dressed as policemen, with helmets on...

 

Bowie leur lançait la corde, puis maintenu par un harnais et des câbles, était projeté dans les airs, alors que les danseurs tentaient de le ramener au sol ...

 

Bowie threw the rope to the dancers which tried to take him down to the stage while pulling at it. Then Bowie, maintained by cables and a harness was flying above the stage... Unbelievable !

 

A la fin du titre, ils parvenaient à leurs fins, et ligotaient entièrement la star, laissée seule sur scène pour le morceau suivant.

 

At the end of the song they succeeded in having Bowie down on stage.Then they tied him properly leaving Bowie sit alone at the centre of the stage.

 

« Heroes » (1977) commençait alors, et un film était projeté en arrière plan, un extrait d'images d'archives sur l'édification du mur de Berlin, dans lequel un berlinois disait adieu à ceux d'en face ...

 

"Heroes" began then with a film projected behind Bowie on a big screen. It showed a man beside the Berlin Wall making his farewell at those on the other side...

Pendant ce temps, Melissa Hurley (la danseuse en robe, pseudo fan du public...) déliait peu à peu Bowie de ses liens.

 

While Melissa Hurley (the dancer with the dress, pseud fan from the crowd) tried to untie Bowie from the rope.

 

« Time Will Crawl » (1987) permettait à Bowie de sortir des effets théâtraux, en se munissant simplement d'une guitare blanche, esthétiquement très belle ...

 

"Time will Crawl" allowed Bowie to leave behind for a moment the theatrical parts of the show. He only had this beautiful white guitar to play on...

Suivait l'introduction au groupe, et Bowie attaquait de nouveau avec quelques titres anti-commerciaux : « Beat Of Your Drum » (1987), « Dancing With The Big Boys » (1984), et « Zeroes » (1987), qui ne rameutaient pas spécialement les foules, on peut dire, même si les fans, eux, s'en satisfaisaient ...

 

Bowie then introduced the band, and continued with anti-commercials songs, as "Beat Of Your Drum", "Dancing With The Big Boys" and "Zeroes". These songs were unknown for the major part of the crowd but the fans were really happy to hear them...

 

 

 

Je me rappelle ne pas avoir reconnu l'introduction de « Let's Dance » (1983), un peu lourde et pesante ...

 

I can clearly remember I didn't recognize at once the first chords of "Let's Dance"... I know it's a shame because my friend recognized it at once ! I thought this version was nonetheless a bit annoying, lacking some vigour...

 

Pendant « Fame » (1975), je vis derrière moi quelqu'un en train d'enregistrer le concert sur un petit magnétophone ... Au vu du matériel, je doutais que le son obtenu soit excellent !

 

During "Fame", I saw someone behind me with a recorder, trying to have a good recollection of this show. Seeing the kind of material, I felt the result wouldn't be so good for sure ! I did what I'm still ashamed today : I came very close to him and started yelling loudly in case I could recognize me later, while listening to the tape !!!

 

Plus tard, je pus me procurer un enregistrement du show, et la qualité était très moyenne : je doute que ce soit la personne que j'avais aperçue, bien que je sois sûr de m'y entendre à proximité à un certain moment  !

 

Later, when I heard the tape of the show, I found the sound quality was average, to say... I really doubt whether this is the one which was recorded beside me, though I'm sure I can hear one of my scream not so far away, but at another moment of the show ...!

 

 

 

Le show se terminait sur « Fame », et les applaudissements pour les rappels se limitaient à un vague murmure et quelques frappements de mains épars, toujours dus à l'effet sonore du stade ...

 

The concert ended with "Fame", then came the extras... The yells from more were barely audible for the reasons I already mentionned...

 

 

 

Le premier rappel, « Time » (1973), une autre surprise, me fit chercher Bowie un bon moment. Il fallut que je lève les yeux très hauts pour le découvrir au sommet de l'immense araignée, vêtu  d'une combinaison argentée, étincelante, aux reflets métalliques ...

 

The first encore was "Time", another great surprise. That song kept me searching Bowie for quite a long time, and I had to look over my head right to the top of the spider to see a flamboyant Bowie in a silver suit singing the song with metallic silver wings in his back !

 

Puis à la surprise générale, dans une clameur et des cris de la foule, d'immenses ailes métalliques se dépliaient dans son dos, renvoyant des éclats de lumière aux quatre coins du stade !

 

The wings once completely opened threw rays of lights thru the stadium : a view I could never forget !

 

Nous étions tous subjugués par la beauté de l'effet obtenu, et par celle de cette chanson culte du répertoire « Bowie » ...

 

We all were in a trance by watching Bowie as an angel, and to hear him singing one of his most beautiful songs ...

 

Les ailes se repliaient ensuite, et Bowie disparaissait à la vue, redescendant dans les entrailles de « l'araignée ». Il ne réapparaissait ensuite que pendu au bout d'un corde, redescendant vers la scène, d'où ensuite il se défaisait de son harnais... Inoubliable ...

 

Then the wings closed again and Bowie disappeared from view, coming down thru the entrails of the spider... Just to appear once again a few moments later hanging by a rope tied on a harness. He then left the harness down to end the song...

« Blue Jean » (1984) et « Modern Love » (1983) terminèrent ensuite (trop) rapidement le concert, et toute la troupe salua enfin le public, comme au théâtre ...

 

"Blue Jean", "Modern Love" ended the show and everyone, the band and the dancers bowed to thank the crowd, as done for the end of a theatrical representation...
