Cet enregistrement est le second de la tournée "SOUND+VISION" effectuée en 1990 (du 4/3 au 27/9), où Bowie se prit au mauvais jeu du "Best Of" Tour !
This recording is the second of the 'SOUND+VISION' tour given in 1990 (from 4/3 to 27/9) where he had the bad idea to take the road for a 'Best Of'' tour !
En effet, il était bien difficile d'admettre que Bowie, qui avait l'habitude d'étonner et de surprendre ses fans autant par ses albums que par ses projets toujours imprévisibles et atypiques, allait tomber dans le piège de tous les dinosaures du rock, façon "Rolling Stones"...
It was hard to admit he was ready to follow the steps of some singers or groups who were used in that exercise, like the 'Rolling Stones' who were doing the same on stage that year...
Certes, il emballa tout ça dans un joli écrin et tenta de se démarquer des autres en faisant choisir les titres qu'il jouerait sur scène par les fans : les setlists étaient impressionnantes et alléchantes, mais finalement sans surprises.
Even if everything looked perfect at first sight, Bowie wasn't maybe so at ease with this project although he decided he would let the fans choose the selection of songs for instance, but this ended in leaving no surprise, the setlist finally looking very much the same as on any "Best Of" cd on sale !
Les vrais fans auraient bien voulu entendre quelques perles sans être pour autant des hits mais leur étant plus chers, tels que "London Boy", "Word On A wing", "Drive-In Saturday" ou même "Lady Grinning Soul" pour ne citer qu'eux...
The real fan would certainly have prefered songs as "London Boy", "Word On A Wing" or "Drive-In Saturday" per say, beautiful songs in the Bowie repertory without being specially hits...
Les défauts les plus graves de cette tournée étaient néammoins ailleurs...
Bowie n'avait peut-être pas prévu à quel point cet exercice, pour lui contre nature, allait vite lui devenir ennuyeux , ainsi que pour ses fans : ils allaient le voir pour la première fois sur scène comme jamais ils n'auraient souhaité le voir !
Maybe the reason why this tour failed was to be found somewhere else...
Bowie maybe didn't realize he would very soon lose any interest in singing his hits again and again during 6 months, and he wouldn't succeed very long in hiding it from his real fans...
Il paraissait empoté, mal à l'aise, semblait souvent forcer une humeur joviale qui transpirait la nervosité (celle-ci se manifesta à plusieurs reprises pendant la tournée sur scène, ce qui là aussi était inédit !).
It seemed as he wasn't at all at ease on stage, and it was obvious he was trying desperately to feel happy with the audience even if some times the evidence came he was very nervous ( which ended sometimes in disturbing some of the shows, which wasn't usual in any previous Bowie tour !)
Vétu d'un costume noir ultra classique, il chantait certais titres à demi caché derrière un rideau transparent (en fait un écran géant projetant des images mettant en scène certains titres), comme s'il n'osait finalement se montrer sous ces jours peu glorieux après une carrière si riche...
He sang dressed in a black costume and spent the major part of the show behind a huge screen, as if he didn't really want to face the audience in this less glorious period...
Autre gros défaut, le choix du groupe. Bowie avait apparemment voulu garder l'esprit 'Tin Machine' de l'année précedente avec un groupe restreint, mais cela se revelait manifestement inadapté pour ce type de tournée...
The band was also a weak part of the show : Bowie probably wanted to keep the general feel of the previous year 'Tin Machine tour' in choosing a small band. It seems this wasn't a good idea for that kind of tour...
De plus les musiciens donnaient une prestation plus que médiocre. : Adrian Belew avait été extraordinaire lors de la tournée '78, mais là malgré quelques bons moments, il s'evertuait à souvent massacrer certaines des plus belles perles du repertoire Bowien. Rick Fox également ne se montrait pas à la hauteur...
Moreover the musicians didn't succeed in giving great versions of Bowie's back catalogue excepted in few songs, like "Golden Years", "Space Oddity", "Suffragette City" or "Jean Genie".
Adrian Belew was used to do a great job during the '78 tour, but this time his renditions in the songs were often pure massacre (excepted in "Stay" and "Pretty Pink Rose", maybe ?). I think Rick Fox was also low the point too...
Cet enregistrement montre bien également que Bowie n'était pas au top vocalement. Il suffit d'écouter un des shows de la tournée 1995-1996 quatre ans plus tard pour apprecier la différence !
Last thing is listening to David's voice : it is obvious in that recording for instance, that he's not in the best conditions. His voice suffers a lot in songs like 'Ashes To Ashes' or 'Life On Mars'...
You 'll have to listen to any show of the 1995-1996 tour four years later to see the difference !
En conclusion, ne vous attendez pas lors de cette tournée au meilleur de David Bowie même si vous écouterez effectivement parmi le meilleur de son repertoire...
To conclude, you must be aware that you won't listen to the best of David Bowie on any recording of this tour (Bowie still managed to give great shows on the second part of the tour), even if the best is played !
En ce qui concerne l'enregistrement lui-même, le son est parfait et le show figure parmi les meilleurs donnés lors de cette tournée.
Concerning this recording, the sound is perfect as it's from soundboard, and you must consider it 's one one the best one of this tour.
